FOOD INC. (CLICK THE POSTER ABOVE TO SEE THE TRAILER)
A very good friend of mine Eric Schlosser (Fast Food Nation) co-produced and appears in Robert Kenner’s spectacular documentary “Food, Inc.” I just came from seeing the film and at once I am outraged, shocked, alarmed, sick-to-the-stomach, offended, and optimistic. Why optimistic? Because the film is helping us to be aware of the fact that we are literally supporting the very food industry that is in so many cases making us sick. When you see the film you will understand EXACTLY what I am talking about.
Every dollar we spend is a vote for what we believe in, and the Food Conglomerates WILL RESPOND when they see where our votes are going. Folks, nothing can be more important than the fuel that we are running ourselves on and the water that we are drinking. Bottom line: SEE THIS MOVIE. The images will not leave your mind and they will literally transform the way you look at the food that you have on the plate in front of you.
MO-FREEK COLLABORATOR SKIP LOTEM has gone MISSING IN ACTION. This is the official word from his Facebook profile page, which is purportedly being run by Lotem Staffers in Washington D.C. I’ve done so many videos with this guy and I feel like I know him well, so even I’m a bit startled by all of this. Part of me thinks it’s just a bunch of panic. I think (and hope) that Lotem shows up again and that he’s fine. I am supposed to be making his next music video!
SKIP LOTEM - YOU ARE WELCOME TO COME HOME ANYTIME.
We just finished working on a new movie with the band CALIFONE. Angela plays the lead character and I play a smaller supporting character, as well as being the editor of the project. Their music is amazing and it weaves perfectly into the story, which was also written by the lead singer of the band Tim Rutili. We just wrapped up the early stages of editing, and next the movie will go to sound-mixing. Later in the Summer I may be able to make a few tweaks with Tim, so we’ll keep you posted.
Now it’s back to… Freek life as usual. A documentary that I made last Summer needs its final edit… and there’s always more to do on the website itself…
NOTE: I took down the “VAULT” section of our Mo-Freek mostly due to technical issues. I’ve gone back on my knees to our YouTube videos, which I can at least embed into the site. So the result is a new “GALLERY” page which has most of everything, and for the first time the videos are broken down by categories: shorts, features, archive & oddities, music videos, Skip Lotem music videos, commercials, and video artwork.
We recently went and saw Rian’s THE BROTHERS BLOOM here in Austin, and it was awesome to see it at the theater. The movie is still running so if you haven’t seen it please do!! Overall I want to thank all of my friends and family who have gone out to support the film.
DID I MENTION THAT THE BROTHERS BLOOM IS COMING TO A THEATER NEAR YOU?? PLEASE GET OUT AND SEE THIS ONE ON THE BIG SCREEN - YOU WILL NOT BE DISAPPOINTED!
Rian Johnson’s THE BROTHERS BLOOM - find it in theaters!!
During 2007 I had the chance to travel Europe with Rian Johnson and THE BROTHERS BLOOM gang. I shot documentary footage of their creative process, and of the places that we visited along the journey. It was a wonderful, mind-opening experience, and the resulting film is just as magical.
It’s hard for me not to smile when I listen to FREEKRADIO. Imagine… a giant cyberspace loop that just goes around in circles, gradually expanding month by month, and year by year. When I was in the 7th grade we had to do some kind of career projection excercise for ourselves… and I came up with the dream of being a radio dj or a movie director. The radio thing has always been a fascination to me. In college I was a dj at our local station. I mostly just played Sonic Youth songs for hours… sprinkled with some New Edition and Slick Rick. FREEKRADIO is in its 5th year now and I just think it’s like everything else… it goes in waves. We’ve had a lot of downtime in the last 5 years - always due to technical problems. These days though my friends have helped me to get it going smoothly and I really just appreciate it.

“All these years later after making our movie ‘Three Days’ and I still had a thrill from seeing these guys make their music. Particularly when they ripped into “Oceansize” I had a series of chills under my skin that transported me back to another place in my life. It didn’t last long, but for those minutes I truly could feel all of the hope, excitement, fear, shame, and love that marked my time spent in the Jane’s Addiction world.”
